When Scott Pendlebury discovered a gap in the market for selling building fixtures online, he knew his days wearing a suit and tie were finally over.
Despite a flourishing career as an investment banker, Scott didn’t hesitate to jump in boots and all and launch the Renovator Store in 2013.
In four short years, the site is now Australia’s fastest growing online building fixtures retailer.
“I saw there was no real online presence for building fixtures in Australia and I thought it was an obvious thing to do,” devoted home handyman Scott tells Studio Ten host Sarah Harris, in the latest episode of The Carousel’s exciting new Game Changers video and podcast series.
“So I never really looked at it like I was taking a leap of faith here. There was a void that needed to be filled, and the first person to do it, and do it well, would change the market.”
Scott’s inspiring story is one of five you can view and hear on The Carousel.
The other Game Changers in the series are Media icon Ita Buttrose, Kendall Seddon, founder and CEO of Little Shoppers, EcoMum and the fast growing LuvMe nappy brand; Sharon Williams, founder and CEO of marketing and PR agency Taurus Marketing; and Karin Adcock, who owned the Australian sector of jewellery giant PANDORA before launching the eco-spiritual Alex and Ani brand.
“Banking is a very difficult job,” adds Scott, the Renovator Store Managing Director, in the latest episode.
“But one thing it gave me was a lot of exposure to other businesses, and that gave me a great understanding of what would work for me.
“That really motivated me to take the best of what I learnt and chase my own dreams.”
And Scott’s best advice for others thinking of chasing their own dreams? – Go for it!
“Make your own decisions, take some risks, and enjoy the benefits when it does succeed.
“It makes you want to wake up in the morning and actually go to work.”
